UCAIR Gas Can Exchange
Thank You for Another Successful UCAIR Gas Can Exchange!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2026 UCAIR Gas Can Exchange. Because of your support, we wrapped up another successful year of helping remove older, higher-emission gas cans and replacing them with cleaner-burning alternatives.
We appreciate the enthusiasm shown by communities along the Wasatch Front and are grateful to all the participants who helped make this year’s program a success.
We also want to apologize to those who were unable to receive a gas can this year. Demand was exceptionally high, and we ran out of inventory earlier than expected. We understand this was disappointing and appreciate your understanding.
Thank you for your continued support of cleaner air and healthier communities. We look forward to serving Utah residents again in future UCAIR Gas Can Exchange events.
To prepare your old gas cans for recycling at any time, remember:
- Dispose of old gasoline at any county Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
- Never dispose of gasoline by pouring it onto the ground or into a sewer, street, drain, stream or other body of water, or by putting it into your regular trash.
- Excess gasoline in good condition can be added to the fuel tank of a gasoline-powered car or truck, outdoor equipment, ATVs, etc.
- When fueling vehicles, outdoor equipment, and ATVs, refuel in the morning or at night to reduce contributions to the formation of ozone, which forms when emissions are released in the hottest parts of the day.
How to Use Your New Gas Can
Why Participate?
Did you know that old gas cans leak up to 1,400 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collectively each year? VOCs are a major cause of the year-round air quality issues we experience in Utah, including summer ozone. Read more about our summer ozone challenges here.
Older gas cans contribute to poor air quality in several ways:
- Vapors permeate through the walls of the container
- Fumes escape while fuel is being dispensed
- Spillage and overfilling occur as fuel is poured into equipment
- Spillage and evaporation occur through secondary vent holes
- Evaporation occurs through inadequately capped spouts
In 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) changed the standard limits of emissions from gas cans. These new standards have lowered VOCs and harmful carcinogens by 75%. UCAIR has been hosting gas can exchanges since 2015 to help Utahns replace their old gas cans with new, EPA-approved versions, like those provided by SureCan. After almost 10 years of offering this event, this event has exchanged almost 13,000 gas cans.
The SureCan offers a rotating spout and thumb button release trigger to prevent spilling and overfilling. It also features a durable 6-layer High-Density Polyethylene construction that seals all vapors inside the can and prevents it from escaping.
While in use, the SureCan vents from under the thumb button. When you are finished, you simply let go of the trigger and the can automatically shuts off the flow of fuel. This automatic closing feature ensures that the gas can is sealed when not in use, preventing leaking vapors, protecting children from accidental spills or ingestion, and eliminating secondary venting holes that often release toxic fumes into the air. Combined with the thicker walls to reduce vapor permeation, it is clear that the SureCan models are much better for our air.
There is a limit of 2 gas cans per household. You must have an old gas can to exchange for each new gas can. Carpooling with friends and neighbors is encouraged.
We will have 2+ gallon cans and 5-gallon cans available. We have limited amounts of each size, and availability is on a first come, first served basis.
Please safely empty your old gas cans prior to arriving at the event. Dispose of old gasoline at any county Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Never dispose of gasoline by pouring it onto the ground or into a sewer, street, drain, stream or other body of water, or by putting it into your regular trash.
Yes, we accept both plastic and metal gas cans for exchange. Please note that the new SureCan gas can that you will receive is plastic.
Thank you to our program sponsors, Chevron and Rio Tinto Kennecott, for their generous support.
Special thanks to our location sponsor, Davis Technical College, for hosting this event.
