Are you a college-bound high school senior? Do you want to gain hands-on experience while making an impact this summer? Apply today for the UCAIR Clear Skies Internship! Application deadline has been extended! Applications are now due by April 22.

This paid internship program offers opportunities for graduating high school students to grow their skills and prepare for success in their future academic and professional careers. During the 9-week program, interns will gain hands-on experience working on local air quality projects while also engaging in various development activities, including job shadowing, site visits, and workshops. Interns will also have the opportunity to network with UCAIR’s diverse portfolio of high-profile partners to build connections with potential future employers.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • All Utah high school seniors preparing to enter college in Fall 2024 are eligible to apply
  • Priority consideration will be given to first-generation college students

Program Details:

  • Program Start: June 3, 2024
  • Program End: August 2, 2024
  • Time Commitment: 15 hours per week
  • Number of Internship Positions Available: 5
  • Schedule: Hybrid schedule with a mix of remote work, in-person hours at our Salt Lake City office, and off-site field trips
  • Pay rate: $12 per hour

Commuter

Commuter e-bikes are built for everyday comfort and are road-focused for navigating urban landscapes. They have a casual yet mildly active riding position which allows you to maintain control and efficiency without being in an aggressive seating position. As the name implies, these bikes are perfect for those looking to use an e-bike for their daily commute.

Need an option that transitions from paved paths to mountain trails? Some e-bikes in this category, like the Summit, are designed to transition well from a commuter bike during the week to a mountain bike on the weekend.

How to Apply

  1. Click on the application link below to open the Google Form application.
  2. Fill out the required fields in the application form, including personal information, contact details, and educational background.
  3. Prepare a one-page resume and a brief (maximum 500 words) personal statement that includes why you are interested in the program and a project idea, solution, or research question related to air quality.
    • You will be asked to upload these items on the last page of the Google Form application. Please upload as either a PDF or Word Document (.doc/.docx).
    • If you have any trouble uploading these items, please email them to info@ucair.org.
  4. Submit the completed application form and supporting materials by April 22, 2024.
  5. After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email from UCAIR acknowledging receipt of your application.
  6. The selection committee will review all applications and notify select candidates for interviews.
  7. If selected, you will be asked to participate in a brief virtual interview with the UCAIR team to discuss your interest in the program.
  8. Successful applicants will be notified by May 1, 2024. There are 5 internship positions available. 
  9. Upon acceptance into the program, you will be invited to attend the orientation day and prepare for the start of the internship program

Yes, applicants must be graduated seniors by the Spring of 2024 to apply for this internship. Seniors who graduated in the Winter of 2023 are eligible.

Yes, this internship is designed for those intending to start college in Fall of 2024.

No, graduates from any Utah high school are eligible to apply. However, please note that you will be required to commute regularly to UCAIR’s Salt Lake City office throughout the 9-week summer internship.

While it is not necessary to be a first-generation student to apply, we prioritize reserving more internship spots for those who are.

To qualify as a first-generation student, you must be part of the first generation in your immediate family (parents or guardians) to attend college or pursue higher education beyond high school. Siblings who have attended college do not count toward determining first-generation status.

Yes, you will be paid $12.00 per hour.

UCAIR encourages interns to explore public transportation options such as TRAX or bus routes. The TRAX Green Line Additionally, carpooling may be arranged among interns living in the same area.

While the majority of the internship will be conducted in person at the Salt Lake City office, there may be some flexibility for remote work depending on project requirements and supervisor approval.

Interns will have the opportunity to develop and implement their own projects related to air quality or get involved with one of UCAIR’s existing projects. Interns will be encouraged to explore new research questions, brainstorm creative solutions, and pursue their interests around air quality.

We expect a commitment of around 15 hours per week during UCAIR’s regular business hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

The internship will start the week of June 3 and will end the week of August 2. This is a duration of 9 weeks.
